Simmered pork and potato (Nikujaga, 肉じゃが)

Most of the girls learn how to cook Nikujaga from their mums in Japan. I didn’t though, but I manage to cook this dish… Coz I am Japanese! You don’t need even one drop of water to cook this dish.  Ingredients (4~6 servings) 4 ~ 5 potatoes (500 g) 3 onions 1 carrot 200 g of thinly sliced pork (if any, otherwise minced pork) 200 g of shirataki (konnyaku noodles) 1/2 tablespoon of oil 1 tablespoon of butter 6 tablespoons of soy sauce 4 tablespoons of sugar  Instructions Cut the potatoes into bite-size chunks. Boiled Fish (魚の煮付け)

Simple and healthy! I can eat at least 3 bowls of rice with it! Ingredients (1~4 servings) 1~ 4 fillets of fish (I prepared a fillet of sole today) A sprinkling of salt 1/2 cup of soy sauce 1/2 cup of cooking sake (Otherwise white wine) 1/2 cup of mirin (otherwise 1/2 cup of sake and 50 g of sugar) 1/2 cup of water (Soy sauce : Cooking sake : Mirin : Water = 1:1:1:1) 1 thumb-size piece of ginger Instruction Sprinkle salt on all side of fish. Less than 20 minutes to prepare! Strongly recommended for Japanese cuisine beginners. All you need is chicken and eggs. Perfect Sunday’s colourful lunch and a Bento’s good friend! Pan-Seared Salmon Fillets with Miso Sauce (Chan-Chan Yaki, ちゃんちゃん焼)

Chan-Chan Yaki is a Japanese local food in Hokkaido where I used to live. I used to cook it quite often when I was there. Miso sauce goes well not only with salmon but also with chicken and pork. When I was a kid, I didn’t like bell peppers. But mum’s stuffed bell peppers made me change my mind about this vegetable. Oyako Don (親子丼, Chicken and Eggs Bowl)

“Oyako” means “a parent and a kid” in Japanese. Not to mention, Oya = Chicken, Ko = Eggs. Some Japanese people might say my recipe is too simple, but I love my simple gyoza.Although gyoza is originally Chinese cuisine, it’s been developed independently in Japan. Now, gyoza is one of the national cuisines.
